Some people might say that…but I’m in the mood to question the status quo, especially when it comes to dieting…
And If you wondered where this profound quote came from….
Yes, I am doing my research in bodybuilding forums to see what the IIFYM community has to say about how great it is. Before we dive deep into this topic and I provide my opinion on if IIFYM works – you must be aware of the fact that my hard and fast opinion is this:
Diets don’t work.
For those of you who don’t know what IIFYM is…it stands for “if it fits your macros” and the reason traditional dieters and healthy eaters love it is because they get to eat non healthy foods and still acheive fat loss…
Macros is short for macronutrients, which are the building blocks of the food we eat.
The 3 macronutrients are carbohydrates, fats and proteins.
What IIFYM declares, is a set number of carbs, fats and protein depending on your bodyweight, sex, age and physical goals. Once you have that “set” number of macros, people will keep track of their macros using an app like myfitnesspal.
There are many IIFYM calculators out there for beginners to figure out their macros..
I’m not going to link one here for you, because I’m not sure if it’s the right thing for you yet..read on…
Let’s define what “work” means…
….(of a machine or system) operate or function, especially properly or effectively.
So let me pose this question to you. When you buy a used car and it “works” for 2 weeks….does it actually work?
If it works for 3 months…and then breaks down…does it still “work”…
If when you are driving this car, it constantly stutters, the check engine light keeps coming on, you have trouble starting it, and it’s creating a whole bunch of daily anxiety and stress, does it “work”…??
You might see where I’m going with this…
I’d like to focus on the words properly and effectively.
ef·fec·tive·ly : in such a manner as to achieve a desired result.
So if your desired result is to drive your car too and from work, across the state to visit family, out for night on the town with friends, and to grandma’s house for Christmas all while feeling safe, secure, stress-free and confident…then all of the above scenario’s would you agree the car does not really work?
It only kinda works… or works “well enough for now”…
In order for a “diet” or a “system” or a car to work…it has to work long term, and not be an area of stress and anxiety.
Here’s the deal. I will share my experience with IIFYM. And after working with hundreds of women and hearing their stories, I’ve come up with a solid conclusion..
If it causes you stress, anxiety and constantly feeling like you are failing, then it does not work.
The PROS of IIFYM:
- most women are not getting enough protein in so automatically increasing your protein will help stabilize blood sugar, reduce cravings and promote fat loss
- you get to eat “treats” pretty much every day “as long as it fits your macros”
- you don’t need to eat bland, boring “healthy” foods
- some people find it sustainable
The CONS of IIFYM:
- perpetuates the dieting mentality of counting every little thing
- it’s still challenging to fit your macros and eat “unhealthy” foods – it takes a daily plan on what you are going to eat
- when you get to the end of the day and you are 50+ carbs over your goal and -72 on your protein 🙁
- eating treats every day just because you can, when you really don’t want them
- when you start to feel anxiety, stress and overwhelm at having to log every single bite
- the majority of women that I work with who have done IIFYM, have used it as a “diet” and it became too much for them
- not sustainable if it causes stress and anxiety and feelings of failure
Here’s what women dieters tell me — they get high anxiety over having to log their foods and fit and “exact” macro budget each day. They feel overwhelmed when they get “off track” and then have a hard time being able to go back and stick to it…
In my experience, following a meal plan did not work for me, because someone else was giving me “rules” that I had to follow and exact meals that I needed to eat. For me, in order to be successful, I had to be allowed to make my own choices, create healthy meals, and eat things that taste good to me. #rulebreakerforlife (Join our Facebook community: Rulebreaker Lifestyle)
