What is the purpose of a vision board?

vision board workshop

You are probably coming from one of 3 places….

  1. Yes!! I’ve always wanted to do a vision board (or it’s time for me to make a new one!)
  2. What is this vision board thing all about and what’s the point?
  3. I live in the real world, and live a real life and don’t have time for this woo-woo stuff…
I used to be very cynical, negative and even expected bad things to happen, thinking people are all selfish a**holes, and that there was nothing to look forward to except more annoying people and situations.

And guess what?

I was right.

I encountered certain types of people and situations over and over again. Continually my thoughts were re-confirmed each time something bad happened. And I was “right” about my negative view on the world — also known as being a realist.

I would say things like, “if you expect the worst, then at least you won’t be disappointed.”

Then came a fateful day in Hollywood, CA that planted a seed that would develop almost 4 years later.

I hung with the cool kids, the young kids, the ones working at the surf shop partaking in questionable activities on the weekends and this particular weekend we were in Hollywood, CA for an LMFAO show.

Aside from having a pretty cool experience at the show and hanging out backstage with Redfoo and Sky Blue, the pivotal moment happened when I asked Red about how he came to rise to stardom. He talked about this book called “The Secret”. He said he just started imagining things coming to him and situations he wanted, but he didn’t know how it would happen. I didn’t know what to take from that conversion, but it stuck with me…

At the time I was probably 23 years old so I wasn’t really sure what this all meant, or if I should be taking life advise from some guys with funky pants and glasses with no lenses. But as all things go, those seeds that are planted bloom later in time.

About 1 year later, after having a huge life awakeing of “what are you doing with your life” and “you could have so much more but you have some work to do”…

I found the book “The Power of Positive Thinking” by Norman Vincent Peale.

It came at a time where I was graduating college, changing some bad habits, changing friend groups, and beginning a new super long distance relationship that required all the prayer and positive thinking that I could manage.

Another year or so later, I found the book “The Power” by a dear friend of mine in California. It blew my mind. Then I found, “The Secret” (by the same author) and was opened up to an entirely new feeling of feelings,¬†and how what is imagined can become real. Some refer to it as the law of attraction.

“Thoughts become words, which become actions.” Joyce Meyer

Set Goals.Take Massive Action.

I won’t go to deep into exactly what the law of attraction is here, because if you were like I was years ago, you may not really be ready to grasp it. (I totally get it). But to explain the law of attraction, think of when you’ve been researching buying a new car — lets just say a Honda CRV.

Once that becomes your focus, it’s always on your mind, and a month ago before you started doing your research on this car, you barely noticed it — but NOW every time you are on the road that is all you see — Honda CRV’s everywhere.

You notice it because it is something you focus on daily. And it’s something you want. And if you focus on it enough, the law of attraction says you will eventually receive it. It may not be now, or immediately or even in the next year. But years from now, when you are going in to get a new car – you think, “I’ve always wanted a CRV and now I can get one.”

That’s the power of envisioning your life how you truly wanting it to be, and living into it, even if you don’t know exactly how it’s going to happen or how long it will take.

I understand it as faith.

So things brings us back to vision boarding. It’s something I started doing around 8 years ago with images and pictures, although I’ve always journaled about the things I wanted and how I see my life unfolding. Many things on my vision boards have unfolded, some are still in the works, and some of them were meant just to inspire me to have a certain new attitude each day.

live-life

I’ve written goals that have changed, or things I’ve completely just disconnected with over the years, but the one thing that remains is my excitement over vision boards.

It’s a chance to get out of “left brain” mode and get into “right-brain creative-feminine-receiving-mode”.

There is something about writing things out, as well as seeing them daily and feeling into them that creates the belief, and the feeling of how would it feel to have, be, or do….

Let me be really clear here. I’m not woo-woo in that I believe the Universe will just provide us with everything we want because we paste a picture on a vision board and think positive thoughts.

But I am 100% in line with envisioning ourselves as the person who has the things, does the things, and becomes what is on that board.

It will always be a process, and it is a beautiful visual representation of where you are now, and what you are becoming.

So this year, I took a leap of faith. I am enamored with speaking, inspiring and connecting to groups of women to empower them to live a life they love. And I envision it on a large scale. But with big dreams also come big fears.

Fears of not being good enough, of being judged, of people not “getting me”, of people thinking I’m a fraud. So this year, though prayer, mediation, discipline and action, I’ve decided to put myself out there on a small scale and serve local women in hosting my first Vision Board Workshop in Apex, NC at the Studio.

Feb. 18, 2017 is actually my 32nd birthday, and I wanted to give back in a small way, which will lead to a ripple effect of women’s lives changing, and my prayer is that I’m part of their story to transformation and growth.
